Abstract

The proliferation of online gambling disguised as digital gaming has emerged as a critical social disaster, particularly within the Zoomer generation. This study seeks to examine the multidimensional factors influencing participation in online gambling and to develop a comprehensive social disaster mitigation framework. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research integrates qualitative insights derived from in-depth interviews with quantitative evidence obtained through surveys and structural equation modeling using partial least squares (SEM-PLS). The findings demonstrate that psychological factors represent the most significant determinants of online gambling behavior, followed by cultural, social, and individual attributes. The consequences are multifaceted, encompassing severe financial losses, familial conflicts, diminished productivity, and heightened psychological distress. In response, the study proposes a social disaster mitigation model comprising five domains: pre-impact interventions, post-impact responses, disaster vulnerability, disaster impacts, and event characteristics. This model underscores the necessity of strengthening digital and financial literacy, enhancing regulatory oversight of digital platforms, providing psychosocial recovery mechanisms, and engaging educational institutions as preventive agents. Accordingly, the study affirms that online gambling should be conceptualized not merely as an individual behavioral issue, but as a broader social disaster necessitating integrated preventive, curative, and rehabilitative policy interventions.
