This study aims to analyze how gender stereotypes and cultural constructs influence the acceptance and legitimacy of female leaders in Indonesian politics, as well as to identify strategies used to challenge these stereotypes. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a case study design on two Indonesian female leaders, namely Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Sherly Tjoanda. The results of the analysis show that both figures successfully negotiated gender norms and cultural challenges through communicative, symbolic, and performative strategies to strengthen the legitimacy of their leadership. Khofifah combined her religious identity and agentic leadership style to dispel religious-based resistance, while Sherly broke through the boundaries of stereotypes as a gender, religious, and ethnic minority through an approach based on social closeness and consistent performance. This study concludes that contextual representation and communication strategies play an important role in reducing gender-based stereotypical barriers. The presence of female leaders who are able to effectively navigate cultural and structural challenges has the potential to encourage a transformation towards more inclusive and substantive political leadership in Indonesia.
