Abstract

This study aims to contribute new ideas to the discourse on esports, evaluate its validity from a sports epistemology perspective, and highlight its implications for formal recognition in the global sports arena. The study was conducted through a literature review method, reviewing 26 articles that are pro and con of esports as a sport. The results of the study indicate that esports does not fully meet the criteria of traditional sports, which include human, physical, skill, rules, and institutional elements. Around 61.5% of researchers stated that esports is not a sport, while 38.5% argued otherwise. Negative impacts such as risks to players' physical and mental health, as well as lack of physical activity, are the main reasons for rejection. On the other hand, esports is recognized as having competitive value and economic potential. However, these positive impacts are not enough to replace the fundamental aspects that are absent. In conclusion, esports is currently more appropriately categorized as a form of competitive entertainment than a traditional sport.
