Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ learning outcomes and engagement in the topic of the human movement system through the implementation of a contextual learning approach based on basic pencak silat GASMI (Gerakan Aksi Silat Muslimin Indonesia) movements. The research was motivated by low student achievement and passive learning behavior due to monotonous teaching methods. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 18 eighth-grade students at SMP Kartika IV-6 Jember. Data were collected through student activity observation sheets and learning outcome tests, then analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods. The findings revealed that student activity improved from an average of 61.15% in the first cycle (categorized as moderately active) to 81.60% in the second cycle (categorized as highly active). Similarly, the percentage of students achieving mastery learning increased from 55.56% in the first cycle to 83.33% in the second cycle.  Conclusion, that integrating basic pencak silat GASMI movements into science learning not only enhances student engagement but also significantly improves understanding of the human movement system. Thus, this approach offers an effective, enjoyable, and culturally relevant alternative for teaching science.
