Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of an integrated upper and lower body plyometric training program on the increase in muscle explosive power and smash stroke speed  in adolescent badminton athletes. This study used a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control group design, involving 30 male athletes from PB Bertuah (aged 15-18 years) who were randomly divided into the Experimental Group (KE, n=15) and the Control Group (KK, n=15). For 6 weeks, KE followed a plyometric training program (2 sessions/week) in addition to regular exercise, while KK only underwent regular exercise. The explosive strength of the leg muscles was measured using the Countermovement Jump (CMJ) test, the explosive strength of the arm and shoulder muscles was measured by  the Seated Medicine Ball Throw (SMBT) test, and the speed of the smash hit was  measured using the radar gun. Data analysis used paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test (p < 0.05). The results showed that KE experienced a significant increase (p < 0.05) on all three variables: CMJ jump height, SMBT throw distance, and smash hit speed. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in KK. A comparison of the change values between the two groups showed that the increase in KE was statistically greater than the KK (p < 0.05) for all variables measured. It was concluded that a  6-week upper and lower body plyometric training program was  significantly effective in improving muscle explosive power and smash stroke speed  in adolescent badminton athletes. This program is recommended as an efficient training method to optimize smash punch performance.
