Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyze how upper body strength training using ascending pyramid and descending pyramid methods affects maximum strength ( ) in kayak sprint athletes in Purwakarta Regency. Using a quantitative experimental approach with a Two-Group Pretest-Posttest Design, the study involved 34 athletes (17 males and 17 females) selected through total sampling. The participants were then divided into two intervention groups using ordinal pairing. To measure performance, two specific rowing tests were used:  Bench Press and  Bench Pull. Based on the paired sample t-test, both training methods showed a significant increase in maximum strength for both male and female groups ( ). However, the independent sample t-test revealed no significant difference in final posttest performance between the ascending pyramid and descending pyramid groups for either the bench press or bench pull tests ( ). In conclusion, training programs using ascending pyramid and descending pyramid methods are equally effective for improving upper body maximum strength in rowing athletes. Ultimately, both methods yield relatively equal final results as long as the total training volume is kept the same.
