Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of understanding children's anthropometric characteristics to support the optimization of motor performance, particularly in small-ball manipulative skills. This study aims to determine the correlation between arm length and small-ball throwing and catching ability among fourth and fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 10 Sanur. This study employed a quantitative correlational method. The research population involved all fourth and fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 10 Sanur, with a final sample of 183 students selected through specific sampling techniques. Data collection instruments included anthropometric measurements of arm length (in centimeters) and a throwing-catching ability test using the 30-second Wall Toss Test. The data analysis technique applied was parametric statistical analysis using Pearson Product Moment correlation and simple linear regression analysis via SPSS software. The prerequisite test results indicated that the data for both variables were normally distributed (p > 0.05) and possessed a linear relationship (p = 0.187). Hypothesis testing results proved a significant relationship between arm length and small-ball throwing and catching ability (p = 0.000 < 0.05). The strength of the correlation between variables fell into the strong category, with a Pearson correlation coefficient (r) of 0.659. Furthermore, the regression analysis revealed a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.434, indicating that arm length contributes a dominant 43.4% to throwing and catching ability, while the remaining 56.6% is influenced by other motor development factors. In conclusion, the physical structure of arm length plays a crucial mechanical role biomechanically in the effectiveness of children's throwing and catching. These findings can be utilized by physical education teachers and coaches in the early sports talent identification process.
