Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between participation in sports and non-sports extracurricular activities and students' values of respect and responsibility in elementary schools. A quantitative approach with a non-experimental correlational design was employed. The participants were 130 students in Grades 3-6 at SDN Cimanggu 1, consisting of 65 students participating in sports extracurricular activities and 65 participating in non-sports extracurricular activities. Data were collected through questionnaires and documentation and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Pearson Chi-Square test. Respect and responsibility were categorized as low or high based on the median score. The results showed that 41 students (63.1%) in the sports extracurricular group had high levels of respect and responsibility, compared with 25 students (38.5%) in the non-sports group. The Pearson Chi-Square test yielded χ²(1) = 7.879 with p = 0.005 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant relationship between the type of extracurricular activity and students' respect and responsibility categories. Descriptively, the proportion of students with high respect and responsibility was greater in the sports extracurricular group. However, these findings do not indicate a causal relationship because the study employed a correlational design.
