Abstract

This study aims to describe deep learning strategies based on project learning in overcoming difficulties in algebra material for seventh-grade students at SMPN 20 Bengkulu Tengah. Algebra is one of the topics that frequently causes learning difficulties for junior high school students, particularly in understanding variables, algebraic operations, factorization, and solving linear equations. The research method employed was classroom action research (CAR) with a descriptive qualitative approach conducted in two cycles. The research subjects were 28 seventh-grade students at SMPN 20 Bengkulu Tengah for the academic year 2024/2025. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, conceptual understanding tests, and documentation. The results showed that the application of deep learning strategies based on project learning significantly improved students' algebraic conceptual understanding from an average of 31% to 79.4% (an increase of 48.4%). This strategy encourages students to think critically, collaboratively, and to connect mathematical concepts with real-life situations. The research findings recommend the adoption of this model as an innovative alternative to mathematics learning at the junior high school level.
