Abstract

This study aimed to describe the scientific literacy skills of tenth-grade students at SMA IT Al-Fityan Medan on the topic of viruses and their roles based on the Test of Scientific Literacy Skills (TOSLS) indicators. The method used was a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design. The research sample consisted of 93 students selected through random sampling from a population of 165 students. The instrument used was a multiple-choice test developed based on TOSLS indicators, and data were analyzed descriptively by calculating the percentage of achievement for each indicator. The results showed that students' overall scientific literacy was categorized as low, with achievement varying across indicators — very low on the indicator of understanding scientific inquiry methods, but moderate on the indicator of organizing and interpreting quantitative data. The highest achievement was found in effective literature searching, while the lowest was found in reading  and  interpreting  data. In conclusion, students' scientific literacy skills still need improvement, particularly in scientific inquiry and data interpretation through inquiry-oriented and data analysis-based learning.
